File Menu

The File menu (shown in Figure A) is available in the main XML Instance window and contains general options for file use, saving, and printing. In addition, the File menu offers options for applying a schema to a document and editing a schema.

Figure A - File Menu

New -
Creates a new XML document.
Open -
Opens a dialog box where you can search for an XML document file to be opened in XML Instance. When a file is selected, it opens in the Edit area. If you choose Open with a document already loaded, the Open XML Document dialog box will appear. After you select a file, the document will open in a new window.
Open From... -
Opens a file based on a URL address. After you choose Open From... a dialog box appears prompting you to enter the URL of a document stored either locally or on the Internet.  Set a default path once in the preferences window to avoid having to enter the entire path each time.
Odbc Import... - Lets you import content from an ODBC source.
Close -
Closes the currently active window. If you have made changes to your document, you will be prompted to save it.
Set Schema...
Lets you apply a schema to the current document. After you choose Set Schema... the Apply Schema dialog box appears. Clicking on the down arrow button in the "Files of type:" text box will drop down a list of the available schema file types.
Edit Schema...
Lets you edit the current schema's source code.
Save and Save As... -
Used to save the currently active file to disk.  Save will automatically save the file to its given filename; if it does not have one yet (i.e., it is Untitled), it will prompt the user to give it a filename. Save As... will always prompt the user for a filename when saving.
Save To... -
Allows you to specify a URL (Uniform Resource Locator) for the current document. To specify a URL, you can either edit the default filename or enter a URL that includes a different filename. Set a default path once in the preferences window to avoid having to enter the entire path each time.
Print Setup -
The Print Setup option lets you set margins for your document printouts.
Print -
The Print option lets you print your document.
(Last Edited Files)-
Lists up to the last five document files that were edited.  To quickly open one of these files, simply click on the desired file's name (or press Alt + number of file).  A window will open for that file and will place you in the Edit area.
Exit -
Closes all open XML Instance windows and ends the application.
